Pyrolosis

Pyrolysis is a thermochemical decomposition of organic material at elevated temperatures in the absence of oxygen. It involves the simultaneous change of chemical composition and physical phase, and is irreversible. The word is coined from the Greek-derived elements pyro “fire” and lysis “separating” Pyrolysis differs from incineration by its intended and designed lack of oxygen.

Oxygen

Oxygen is prevalent in incinerators, and one reason they are being banned in many countries due to the reactions of materials inside the incinerator with the allowed oxygen at high temperatures. Gasification is a process that converts organic or fossil fuel based carbonaceous materials into carbon monoxide, hydrogen and carbon dioxide.

Pyrolytic Process

This is achieved by reacting the material at high temperatures (>700 °C), without combustion, with a controlled amount of oxygen and/or steam.The controlled amount of oxygen is not required in ThermGen’s pyrolytic process as the intention is to fully destroy the waste and not use it as a source of gasification feedstock. This reduces the amount of emissions as a result of the no added oxygen the ThermGen design uses in it’s pyrolysis process.

Design Philosophy

The Design Philosophy Converting any type of waste to energy is based on two distinct steps; the first utilizes a heating process to change the solid waste into a combustible gas (syngas), followed by the second step which takes the combustible gas, cleans it to varying degrees or not at all, and uses the energy value of the gas to the next option to combust the gas in the following options →

Combustion

Combust in kilns, Combust in boilers to make steam Combust in internal combustion engines, Catalytically produce liquid fuels, chemicals, and other products, There are three basic processes used in the first step of creating the syngas, with the key distinction being the amount of air added to the reactor. Thermgen design options can be adapted to specific site requirements, including waste to energy, if a high enough BTU source of waste is being processed, and resulting heat, to steam, to energy output is feasible.

Design Options

It’s an approach that brings together the best of financial planning and the best of investment management.

The single ThermGen® units produce adequate heat to drive a moderately sized Steam Genset, producing from 1/2 to 1 Megawatt based on volumes of waste, btu profile of the waste, and related operating conditions.

There are options for assembling a series of ThermGen® units which allow for greater volumes of waste processing as well as increased Megawatts output.

Additional Design Options

It’s an approach that brings together the best of financial planning and the best of investment management.

Additional designs include adapting the burner systems to use dedicated fuels such as landfill gas to start the thermal process.

This makes the ThermGen® / Thermal Oxidizer combination an ideal application at landfills. Gas emission, odors, and limited ability to add more fill means the landfill needs to lower regulated emissions which the TO unit does, as well as the TG unit’s ability to process waste with unique revenue opportunities.

Unit Sizes

  • 500 lb./ hr. up to 2,000 lb./ hour
  • TG units can be arrayed in series for larger per hour volumes.
  • Can be custom designed for in line attachment at facilities where waste generation and intermediates occur.
  • The above numbers are nominal processing volumes per hour. The amount varies dependent on the waste profile, moisture content, BTU value, and related parameters.
  • CoreTech has the ability to provide a batch processing ThermGen unit for a variety of materials requiring special handling a continuous system is not suitable for. This would apply to certain gaseous materials where a completely secure enclosed system is required.
